What We Accept?

Aphotic Realm accepts unpublished short stories of any genre as long as they are dark, sinister, or eerie in tone. Stories must contain a minimum of 1000 words and not surpass 5000 words.

What We Don't Accept?

Gore for the sake of gore, or sex for the sake of sex. There are other publications that publish stories for shock value – we are not one of them. With that said, we are not opposed to it. Any act of violence or sex should be an integral to the plot.

Please Note!

Child abuse in any way, shape, or form will be instantly rejected.

Aphotic Realm does not publish fan fiction, novel excerpts, or works-in-progress.

At this time, we are unable to offer any compensation for your hard work. As Aphotic Realm grows and expands its premium services, we have no intentions to pocket the profit because we are here for the love of the craft. Instead, we will turn that monetary gain back toward our writers.

For the time being, publication with Aphotic Realm includes the opportunity to promote your writing. We will provide a link to your blog, website, social media, or to the online retailer where your books are for sale. In addition, we will have a weekly or monthly author spotlight where we will post the above information as well as your bio or (if such time allows) an interview.

When You Submit

If you are interested in submitting your story for consideration of the June/July print publication, see details here.

By submitting a story to Aphotic Realm you guarantee that you are the owner of the copyright to that work. We do not require a transfer of copyright, however by submitting a story to us you agree to grant Aphotic Realm an exclusive right to publish your story.

If accepted, we reserve the exclusive right to publish your story for up to six months after the initial date of publication.

When you are ready to submit, send an email to Submissions@AphoticRealm.com. In the body of the email, please include a bio consisting of fifty to one hundred words, a link to your writer's page (if applicable), and your story in an attached DOC or DOCX file.

Finally, your story must follow William Shunn's fiction manuscript format. Details on how to format your document can be found here.

If you have any questions, please contact us.
