Hear, Ye! Hear, Ye! MASSIVE UPDATE!

A Note of Thanks and What We Learned.

First of all, we would like to thank all of our contributors that made the debut of our first issue, Apparitions, possible! We couldn’t have done it without you. That said, this was our first run–as editors–at creating a magazine, and at the risk of sounding pompous, we believe it turned out great! It was a learning process. We encountered some hurdles and got snagged on some unforeseen difficulties, but we persevered! In that process, we have developed a system–a method to the madness–that will ensure that all future issues will be produced with the utmost efficiency. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, follow the links below and grab yours today!

In addition to what we learned during the production of the magazine we were taught an even bigger lesson regarding our online publication…

Unfortunately, our initial goal of publishing new stories every Friday has become unrealistic. There are just too many factors that prohibit us to do so. It worked well for the first few weeks, but then it became apparent that it wasn’t possible (at least at this time) to keep it up. Either we didn’t receive enough submissions or the submissions we received didn’t make the cut. We don’t want to publish subpar material just so we can publish something–hopefully this makes sense.

BUT DO NOT FEAR! The Online Publication Isn’t Going Anywhere.

Instead of the weekly story updates, we will be doing monthly story updates. This gives us a bigger window to read, sort, and accept submissions. Also at the end of the month there will be a deluge of new stories to read instead of the one or two that trickle in weekly. With that, we have more to announce.

NEW SUBMISSION TYPES!

Like most people, we enjoy our strange and sinister fiction in many formats. Although our primary focus is on prose, we are pleased to announce that we will begin accepting submissions for artwork, short comics, short film/video, and creative non-fiction! Check out our SUBMISSIONS PAGE for all the specifics!

Now, on to the announcement you’ve all been waiting for…

Aphotic Realm Issue 2 Theme Announcement!

Betrayed! Banished from sanctuary. Left for dead. A knife in the back. Deceit and bloodshed. Our October – November issue of Aphotic Realm Magazine will be titled, Banished.

The theme: Each story must include a banishment or betrayal, but there is a catch… Not a twist ending. The banishment or betrayal should take place toward the beginning of the story because we want to witness how the characters survive—or attempt to survive.

The focus of this issue is survival. Whether your character is thrown out an airlock in the void of space, left on a deserted island to rot, bamboozled and beaten by so-called friends, or brutally betrayed by loved ones—we want to see how they handle the situation for the better…or the worst.

The cover art, pictured above, is a spectacular piece by Rolands Kalniņš. We hope this image helps to spark your creativity for the theme.

In addition to fiction, we will be opening up submissions to creative non-fiction, comics, book reviews and artwork. All of the fine print can be found here.

The deadline for submissions to BANISHED will be October 1st, 2017.

We can’t wait to see what you send our way!

On your mark, get set, submit!
